Saigon II, this painting survived as a symbol of that point in history. In it, an American man helps the stranded Vietnamese to safety in his helicopter. He was never identified. That man was my grandfather. If you visit his house, he has another painting like this hanging on his wall. A close-up shot at the same time as the photo above, and her face is clearly visible. So how did it get there? My grandfather is a 2nd generation American missionary who went to Vietnam. He was born there and so are his children. He continued his service during the war, as he had many years ago. Then he had to evacuate. He could not outrun the Vietnamese, only for his Christian beliefs and American sympathies to suffer terrible fates at the hands of the VietKong. So what did he do? While still wearing the usual black trousers and white short-sleeved dress shirt common with Vietnamese missionaries at the time, he persuaded a friend to land his helicopter on the roof of a nearby building. It was the pilot who took the picture that hangs on my grandparents’ wall today. They loaded as much as they could and carried them to safety. I don’t know what happened after that point because my grandfather was very humble and didn’t want anyone to know this story. Like many of his generation, he prefers quiet heroism to fame. Actually, I know this because my mom overheard a conversation between her and grandma one night and asked her to explain the story to her. That’s why I didn’t include his name or any identifiable details where it should be avoided. He recently suffered a stroke and is now in a wheelchair, but has never stopped working up to that point. Until last year he had traveled from Vietnam, China and even a little bit Russia and spoke frequently at other Vietnamese and American churches around the world, raising awareness of what Vietnam was like and sharing his experiences. To this day, she still regrets not being able to pursue her passion. I’m sure he’s my ties to many more missionaries (I know I’m related to many American and Norwegian missionaries). And he never, ever ceased to do the work of the Kingdom. That, my friends, is the definition of badass. Edit: As I explained above, I cannot put my grandfather’s name or close-up photos because he does not want his identity known. Thank you! Edit #2: My grandfather passed away recently. There have been many stories of heroism, faith, and courage over the years I have spent with him, all brimming with the purpose and vitality of doing the work of Christ.
